Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Karad, the first Women’s college in Satara district of Western Maharashtra came into existence on 7 August, 1986. The progressive and visionary leadership  of Shikshan Mandal, Karad, took the decision  to cater to the need of quality higher education of girl students in Karad and rural areas in its vicinity. Shikshan Mandal Karad, the parent institution was envisioned as a living memorial of the ideal of national education cherished by Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak 0n 2 Aug. 1920 and continues to confidently tread on the path for the past 102 years.

The college is committed to the noble cause of education of women, the marginalized section of our society. The college has taken up the vision of empowerment of girl students in pursuit of knowledge, values and self –reliance. We aim at the holistic development of our students, majority of who hail from rural areas and also from weaker socio-economic background. We aim to mould young women through relevant courses in the formal and non-formal streams to achieve excellence in every walk of human life. The college is committed to provide a wide range of professional and vocational courses for women to meet the changing socio-economic needs, with human values and purposeful social responsibility and to achieve excellence with ‘quality in every activity’.

My college is recognized under section 2 (f) and section 12 B of the UGC Act 1956 since 1998. The college was accredited with ‘B’ Grade in the first two cycles of accreditation by NAAC Bangalore and augmented the grade to B+ with a CGPA of 2.69 in the third cycle in 2018. Presently we are bracing for the fourth cycle and hope to improve upon our earlier grade in the pursuit of excellence. The college has carved out a niche for itself as an institution of repute in Western Maharashtra. It is committed to consolidating and reinforcing affordable programmes in terms of quality and expanding educational needs to prepare our students for global challenges. Affiliated to Shivaji University, Kolhapur, we follow a holistic regimen so that the girl students who pass out are fully fledged, independent thinking individuals. Both, in terms of academic and extracurricular activities the college has been in the forefront in the region.

In 2008, the college launched the Post Graduate Programme M.A/M.Sc. Geography. This was followed by setting up of the Geography Research lab for MPhil and PhD research Students in 2010. The B.A. course in Psychology was introduced in 2016. In 2022-23 we diversified by introducing the B.Sc. Programme and B.Com (Information Technology) Course.   We have ensured availability of modern teaching –learning methods and use of ICT under the dynamic and proactive guidance of the Management. The futuristic vision of the Management is evident in the encouragement and support rendered to the college in setting up the Centre for Skill Development in 2016-17. The Centre runs more than 20 short term skill development courses of durations between a few days to six months or even a year. In 2020 the UGC - NSQF granted permission to the college to launch certificate courses – ‘Communication Skills in English’ and ‘Yoga and Fitness’ and a diploma in ‘Food Processing’. These have the approval of the Govt. of Maharashtra and are affiliated to Shivaji University Kolhapur. These courses are a significant step towards the economic empowerment of our students. The most significant aspect of the courses run by the Centre for Skill Development is that they are provided at a modest fee of Rs. 1000/- to the students, making them very much affordable. The college has a recognized NTA centre which is a boon to students from surrounding areas who appear for various competitive exams, entrance exams etc. Considering the economic constraints on our students who largely hail from rural and socially and economically weak background, due care is taken to provide financial help to students to enable them to pursue their dreams.

We strive for the balanced development of our girl students through capacity building and creation of new knowledge. Activities like Green Club, NSS help in promoting awareness among the students regarding environment protection and inculcation of human values. The Career Katta initiative along with guidance for competitive exams provides valuable inputs to the students regarding the choice of career. Our students are actively engaged in outreach and extension activities through NSS.

We aim at marching ahead to face the challenges and fulfill the demands of the 21st century. We emphasize commitment to social progress, peace and national integration through quality higher education.

We are grateful to all the support we receive from Shivaji University, Kolhapur and the Management. On behalf of the College, I request the parents, alumni, staff and students to join hands to fulfill our mission, vision and objectives.

Text Box: History :-
Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Karad was founded on August 7, 1986 to cater to the needs of higher education of women in Karad town and adjacent rural areas by Shikshan Mandal, Karad, a well-known educational society of Western Maharashtra. The society boasts of its illustrious existence of over hundred years dedicated to providing quality education rather than multipoint expression. It has provided good infrastructure, human resources and most importantly, leadership with vision. In view of the existing social matrix in the late 1980s the leadership of the Sanstha felt the need for a good women’s college on the city side of Krishna bridge, a separating divide between the city on one side and Vidyanagar, a higher education hub that had come up on the northern side of the bridge. Commuting from the city and adjacent rural areas across the river was becoming hazardous to the students in general and girl students in particular. Karad being one of the educationally vibrant tehsils, had a large population willing to educate their girl wards in higher education. Mahila Mahavidyalaya Karad fulfilled this need and continues to do a good service to the society even today.Along with social security, Mahila Mahavidyalaya provides quality higher education to girl students.
That women do differ in their psychological makeup and their learning priorities is undisputed. Many people doubted the launch of women’s college in an era of co-education. But the college not only survived but also flourished courtesy the courage and heroic work of the Sanstha, the diligence and hard of the teaching staff and inquisitive students. The efforts were blessed with success and the college progressed and earned permanent affiliation within eight years in 1994 and UGC listing soon followed in 1998. The college was accredited by NAAC with ‘B’ grade in 2004, re-accredited with ‘B’ grade in the year 2012 and B+ in 2018respectively. At the end of academic year 2016-17, college classrooms are equipped with ‘Interactive Digital Boards’ as well as Wi-Fi Internet connectivity. Answering the need for diversification, the college started B.Sc. programme and B.Com. (IT) course in 2022-23.The college has tried its best to keep pace with the needs of higher education by developing ICT facilities, good and adequate infrastructure, a library rich in books and e-resources, computer labs with latest facilities, state- of- art washrooms, and of course a number of skill development courses at very affordable costs to ensure financial empowerment. All these efforts are complemented with various activities that inculcate human values among the students.
